Lets begin with Esporão and his farms.

Herdade do Esporão

Located in the heart of the Alentejo, the doors at Herdade do Esporão are open to visitors, every day.

Visit the vineyards, the kitchen gardens and the ampelographic field. Travel back in time and discover the history of Defesa do Esporão. Or simply take a break to try regional products, unveil the secrets of how we make our wines on a visit to the wineries, and challenge your senses with a tasting.

The Spaces

RESTAURANT

A project by the architecture studio Skrei, also responsible for the project of the wine cellar of Esporão. The intervention seeks to unify the different environments that characterize the diversity of experiences that the wine tourismo offers. Thus the relationship between the landscape and the interior of the building establishes itself before a strategy of transparency and luminosity. Based on the principle of the concept of supply, we tried to materialize in the spaces the same idea, through the use of materials recovered from the industry itself and the activity of the Estate, namely oak barrels, sheep’s wool and metal.

GARDEN RESTAURANT

Herdade do Esporão restaurant now extends to the vegetable garden, the origin of everything we do – nature. Outdoors, with a view for the vineyards, our long table offers a unique and exclusive experience during the season when the days are longer. In a laid-back atmosphere, dinner is served early, to enjoy the sunset, prepared in a dedicated space for basic cooking using only fire. Here, the closeness to the ingredients and the kitchen invite you to share a moment relishing in the simplicity of the cuisine and the landscape, which merge into a complete experience of what we produce.

  • MENU 1 comprised of: 4 Appetisers, 1 Fish Entrée or 1 Meat Entrée and 1 Dessert

The menu is available for groups between 10 and 16 people. Please book at least 1 week ahead.

The programs

Tour & Tasting at the Winneries

We begin this tour in the vineyards, where are discussed some organic production methods.

Discover the different Herdade do Esporão winemaking processes in the Monte Velho and Lagares Wineries.

Wine tastings, carried out in the Garden cloisters, included 2 white wines and 2 red wines (Esporão Colheita White & Esporão Colheita Red and Esporão Reserva White & Esporão Reserva Red), offering fruity and fresh characteristics, as well as the elegance and full-bodiness of more complex wines.

BIKE RIDES

Our Wine Tourism offers bikes and maps for you to tour the Estate and discover interesting places. Enjoy these rides at your own pace, without guides, with a just a map for company.

PICNIC AT HERDADE DO ESPORÃO

After a bike ride through the Estate, restore your energy with a picnic comprised of products selected by our Chef.

Available from March to October, depending on weather conditions.

FARM TO TABLE HANDS-ON

From September onwards, the Herdade do Esporão’s Restaurant will be conducting three gastronomic experiences, in the new “slow cooking in fire” kitchen. Outdoors, by the vegetable garden and with a view over the vineyards, Chef Carlos de Albuquerque will welcome three chefs from several Portuguese regions. All share the respect for local seasonal products, which is the motto for every dinner. This four-handed dinner will have a surprise menu, made with four hands, and will be served at sunset.

TERRACE

The ample terrace of the Estate’s restaurant ends where the vineyard begins, offering a panoramic view of the lake. It is ideal for alfresco dining while enjoying the long sunny days of the Alentejo, as well as the tranquillity of a landscape that stretches as far as the eye can see.

TASTING ROOM IN THE CELLAR

The tasting room of the cellar was also rethought by the architecture studio SKREI. According to the architect Pedro Jervell, the idea was that one could live the experience of the whole wine producing process. All this environment describes a scenario in which the process is the story that the wine goes through until tasted.

In the middle of this factory scenario, there is a moment of reflection on the history of the company, two wine cellars show the collection resulting from years of production since 1985. To taste this history, ambiguous elements have been designed mixing with the space, which illuminate and serve the wine, just as the ambiguity present in the very tasting of wine, which depends on the person and the context.

Finally, the wood and stainless steel with the Reguengos de Monsaraz typical rugs generate a dialogue of materials that embrace all the structural concrete of the cellars.

Crossing the country from south to north you can find another farm from Esporão, Quinta Dos Murças.

THE ESTATE EXPERIENCE

Quinta dos Murças is located on the right bank of the Douro River, between Régua and Pinhão, and is characterized by the diversity of its eight terroirs. This is a historic Estate where the first vertical vineyard in the Douro was planted, dating to 1947.

The wine tourism has a Main House, Store, Winery, and Cellar. While staying in the house, guests can experience the Estate’s daily life and discover the region in an authentic and sheltered experience. Quinta dos Murças house has five bedrooms that are divided into two familiar areas and can accommodate up to 10 people, who can enjoy the living room with a balcony to the Douro river, a kitchen, and the garden with a pool. It’s an opportunity to be with your family in an isolated place with all the comfort.

The exclusive tastings, the trials, the walks, the picnics, and going to the vegetable garden are some of the moments that can be part of your stay. We want to provide you an experience to discover the region, the diversity, and everything we produce here.

Trails

We developed 3 different hiking trails that take you through the water springs (Minas), the riverbank (Margem) or the Assobio (Whistle) vineyard.  Enjoy these walks separately or turn them into a single hike. Take your time and discover the full diversity of the Estate which, each season, reveals a different side of its biodiversity.

THE ESTATE EXPERIENCE

Located in the Lima River Valley at the heart of the Vinho Verde Demarcated Region, Quinta do Ameal is a historical property from 1710. Side by side with the Lima River, for an extension of 800m, you can find 30 hectares of green landscape, from which 14 belong to the Loureiro grape variety.

The wine tourism is a genuine place, where you can live unique experiences, in comfort and harmony with the surrounding area. The Main House with three suites and the Vineyard House with two suites can give you the privacy and the tranquillity that you seek for in a family vacation.
